The Wall Street Journal talks up Jennifer Clary and The Silent Thief

The 17th annual GenArt Film Festival wrapped on Tuesday, after “seven premieres and seven parties” celebrating fresh-faced filmmakers.

“I didn’t always know I wanted to make films,” said Los Angeles-based filmmaker Jennifer Clary, whose “The Silent Thief”—a dark comedy meets psychological thriller—screened on Sunday. “I went to school for theater. I wanted to be an actress. I started taking film classes at Vassar [College] and realized, I adore directing! It’s such a rush to have all these moving pieces, trying to figure out a puzzle with all these people. I would do anything to be able to direct fulltime.”

Filmofilia : An Interview with Director Jennifer Clary

Jennifer Clary, for those who don’t know, is a young but very promising film director. She has made a name for herself through short films Dirty Girl and The Christmas Conspiracy, both of which have garnered considerable attention on the film festival circuit. Now she has made her first full-length film, The Silent Thief, which appeared in our Daily Trailer a couple of weeks back. A mixture of a grounded family drama and a tense psychological thriller, it tries to buck many of the trends associated with “the indie drama”, and if word from the festivals it has shown at is anything to go by, it succeeds. It features an impressive cast, especially considering that this is the director’s first go at 90+ minutes on the big screen, ranging from promising Scout Taylor-Compton to 36-year film acting veteran Frances Fisher.

We were lucky enough to get to speak to Jennifer, and in this interview she reveals the inspiration for the unique scenario in The Silent Thief, her first impressions of lead actor Toby Hemingway, and spills a few beans on her next steps toward world domination, which include a stop-motion musical, no less.
